Even though there are only four people in my family, our coat closet is full. That means we each have way too many coats! Plus, it’s obvious that we only wear one or two of our favorites. So I think it’s time to get rid of a few jackets.
Our coat closet also has a rolling toy car (which we’ll keep in there for the little one) and a basket full of gloves and hats. But it’s also storing a few extra throw pillows and unused picture frames. Why? I’m not really sure. Probably because we quickly hid them, and now we just ignore them!
If you have a stuffed-too-full coat closet like mine, take a few minutes to declutter this space. It’s a great next step in this Declutter Your Home challenge!

GATHER YOUR SUPPLIES >>>
SET A TIMER >>>
Take 5 to 15 minutes to declutter your coat closet. I bet it won’t take as long as you think!
DECLUTTER THE COAT CLOSET >>>
It’s time to move out the items that don’t belong and donate the coats we don’t wear. It’s like hitting two birds with one stone: you’ll be able to streamline your coat closet and give to those in need. A win-win situation!
Grab your decluttering toolkit for this task to help you make quicker decisions. Then ask yourself the following questions:
- Is there anything in your coat closet that belongs in another location? Put these items in your “relocate” box.
- How many coats, gloves, scarves, etc. does each person in your family need? Any items above and beyond that number can be moved to the “donate” or “sell” pile.
- Is there a better way to keep other items in your coat closet organized? Perhaps a hook for your scarves or clips for your gloves?
That’s it! Work quickly and you’ll be finished in a flash!
