Alright. I realize everyone reading this isn’t a mom. But maybe you have a mom. Or know a mom. Or have noticed a mom as you’re driving down the street.
The thing about a mom’s vehicle is that the vehicle isn’t hers at all. It belongs to the kids. They drop crumbs. Throw paper. Hide toys. Spill drinks. Put ick-sticky hand prints all over the door, windows, seats…
Mom-mobiles are a mess.
Mine is…and it drives my husband crazy!

Take 5 to 15 minutes to declutter your vehicle. You’ll thank yourself every time you have to drive somewhere.
DECLUTTER YOUR CAR >>>
We’re moving on to the next step of this Declutter Your Home series, and even though a vehicle isn’t technically in your home, it can often feel like a home away from home. And it can always use a bit of decluttering!
To quickly and efficiently declutter your vehicle, grab a trash bag and a tote bag. Work your way front to back, opening up any compartments along the way, and put anything that’s trash in the trash bag and anything that needs to be taken inside in the tote bag.
Everything must be taken out with the exception of a few items:
- Vehicle registration
- Vehicle insurance information
- Vehicle maintenance records (optional)
Tip: You can keep this information in a small accordion file housed in your glove compartment.
Tip: You can scan these documents as a backup.
Depending on your location, your lifestyle, your commute time, and your family’s needs, there are a few other items you may want to keep in your vehicle. The following is a list of suggestions:
- Jumper cables
- Repair kit
- De-icer kit (unless you reside in South Florida)
- Warm blanket (can also be used as a picnic blanket)
- Umbrella (used to shield rain or sun)
- Water bottles (for emergency situations)
If you find yourself stuck in traffic, be prepared with a couple of water bottles. If your commute takes you through miles of hot open sunshine, an umbrella will help you stay cool as you wait for your flat tire to be repaired. And we’ve all heard about precious ones depending on water and blankets to survive a snowstorm.
Obviously, we don’t want to pack our vehicles full of “stuff”, so think through your actual needs. By keeping only the necessities in your vehicle, you can finally have the clean, organized vehicle you’ve always wanted.
